A participant in the Utrecht marathon died on Tuesday, after he fell ill during the race on Sunday. The student, who was 22 years old, was a member of student union Veritas. He had been a member of the union since 2023 and was well-trained for the marathon. The student became ill on Sunday afternoon in Houten, where a large part of the route passed through. Emergency services resuscitated him and a trauma helicopter landed. The area where the emergency responders helped him was cordoned off with screens. The marathon organization reacted with sadness to the news. "A somber day for Utrecht. We wish everyone a lot of strength." On the day of the event, several measures were taken to protect participants from the heat, such as extra water distribution points and extra first aid personnel along the route. No statements have been made about the cause of the student's death.
